Adding a Fourth Row Changes More Than the Picture
Most slots present three rows. A four-row grid on five reels raises the visible symbol count from fifteen to twenty, which sounds like a cosmetic difference and is not. The extra row alters the number of possible symbol arrangements, the shape of the paytable, the geometry of the paylines and the way the whole thing reads on a screen.
The combinatorial effect
Each additional position multiplies the number of possible screens. A five-by-three grid has fifteen cells; five-by-four has twenty. With the same symbol set on each reel strip, the number of distinct arrangements grows substantially, which gives the designer more room to place rare outcomes without making common ones too common.
That extra room is why four-row grids often accompany higher volatility. The distribution can be stretched further because there are more distinguishable states available to stretch it across, and the designer can reserve a larger share of return for arrangements that occur infrequently.
What it does to paylines
A payline on a three-row grid has limited scope for interesting shapes. Four rows allow considerably more paths, which is part of why forty lines is a common count on this geometry where twenty or twenty-five is typical on three. More lines means more registered wins per spin, most of them small.
Seeing it directly
Opening the free demo alongside a three-row title from the same studio makes the difference obvious in a way that description does not. The four-row screen is busier, the individual symbols are smaller at the same display width, and the eye takes longer to establish what happened after each stop.
That last point is a genuine cost. Legibility declines with row count, particularly on a phone, and it declines further on cascading games where the grid is in motion much of the time.

The scatter consequence
Twenty positions rather than fifteen means more places a scatter can land, which changes the trigger arithmetic. Designers compensate by adjusting how many scatters sit on each strip, so the frequency ends up wherever they wanted it, but the raw geometry is different and the compensation is invisible from outside.
Whether the extra row is worth it
It depends entirely on the screen. On a desktop monitor a four-row grid is comfortable and the additional activity is pleasant. On a phone in portrait it is cramped, and the symbols end up at a size that requires attention to distinguish. That is a legitimate reason to prefer three-row games on mobile and it is a preference worth forming deliberately rather than discovering after a frustrating hour.
